Port Coquitlam maintains a more practical, unpretentious, community-driven vibe than the cities beside it — a down-to-earth suburb just east of Coquitlam, with a distinct identity rooted in its industrial heritage, an extensive community trail system, and a genuinely walkable downtown core.

P.S. — about the commute

"Port Coquitlam doesn't have a SkyTrain station of its own. It's a five-to-ten minute bus ride to Coquitlam Central, and from there you're on the Millennium Line or the West Coast Express. For some families that's nothing. For others it's the deciding factor — so let's talk about it before you fall in love with a house."

Parks I'd send you to.

The Traboulay trail is the headline, but the parks under it are the reason families stay. Lions for the gatherings, Castle for the view, Blakeburn for the days you're pushing a stroller.

Traboulay PoCo Trail

A continuous 25 km loop for cycling and running, following the Pitt and Coquitlam rivers most of the way around the city.
Hiroshi’s note

It encircles the entire city. Wherever you end up buying, you're near a piece of it.

Open green parkland at golden hourHIROSHI'S PICK

Lions Park

Picnic shelters, an adventure playground and a spray park, with the Coquitlam River and riverside trails running through.
Hiroshi’s note

This is the birthday-party park. Book the shelter early — they go.

Spray park
A big tree on an open fieldHIROSHI'S PICK

Castle Park

A second spray park, reservable picnic space and an off-leash dog area — with sweeping Fraser River and Fraser Valley views.
Hiroshi’s note

Best view in PoCo, and the off-leash area means the dog comes too.

Valley views
A trail through the treesHIROSHI'S PICK

Blakeburn Park

A flat 1.6 km loop that's wheelchair-accessible and stroller-friendly, with separate playgrounds for toddlers and school-aged kids.
Hiroshi’s note

The one I point new parents and grandparents to — flat the whole way around.

1.6 km loop

Rainy-day saves.

Two rec centres carry the winter here, and between them they hold five sheets of ice and two pools. If you have a kid in hockey, this is the pair of buildings your week runs on.

Three ice rinks, a library, a fitness centre, a two-lane leisure pool and a gymnasium with indoor courts.

Hyde Creek Rec Centre

A six-lane lap pool, an exercise centre and squash courts.
Hiroshi’s note

If you actually swim laps, this is the pool — not the leisure pool at PoCo Rec.

The library

Inside the PoCo Rec Centre — the same building as the rinks, which is exactly where you want it.

Downtown Port Coquitlam — City Hall and Veterans Park on Shaughnessy StreetHIROSHI'S PICK

Downtown Port Coquitlam

A compact main-street core you can park once and walk — the thing most suburbs traded away.
Park once

With little kids.

I'm raising my own family in the Tri-Cities, so this row is field-tested. PoCo's family infrastructure is unshowy — and it's all actually there.

Lions Park spray park

Adventure playground, spray park and picnic shelters, right by the river.
Hiroshi’s note

Two spray parks in one city — Lions and Castle. Handy on a July weekend.

Getting around.

No SkyTrain station of its own — so the commute is a two-part plan. Here's how people actually do it.

Coquitlam Central StationHIROSHI'S PICK

Coquitlam Central

Five to ten minutes by bus, and then you're on the Millennium Line, the West Coast Express or the R3 RapidBus.
Hiroshi’s note

There's an 888-stall Park & Ride there too, right beside the mall.

Schools, and their programs.

Port Coquitlam is School District 43, which runs a K–5, 6–8, 9–12 structure. Five of its eleven elementaries are French Immersion sites. Catchments go by your permanent home address; the district’s locator gives the official answer.

Every secondary and middle school below, plus the elementaries running a program worth choosing a street for. The full Port Coquitlam directory, with addresses, is on the all-areas schools page.

Hiroshi’s noteDRAFT · CONFIRM

If French Immersion is on your list, Port Coquitlam is the easiest place in the Tri-Cities to stay in it — five of the eleven elementaries are Early Immersion, three of the four middle schools carry it, and Riverside takes it through Grade 12 without leaving the city. There are only two secondaries here, so that choice comes earlier than families expect.

School list and programs from sd43.bc.ca, September 2026. Catchment information is provided for convenience and is approximate; boundaries are set by School District 43 (Coquitlam) and change, and a catchment does not guarantee enrolment. Common questions.

There's no SkyTrain station — how bad is that?

It's a five-to-ten minute bus ride to Coquitlam Central, and from there you're on the Millennium Line, the West Coast Express or the R3 RapidBus. Drivers use the TransLink Park & Ride on the Wilson Ave corridor. It's a real trade-off, and it's the only one.

Is Port Coquitlam good for young families?

102 licensed daycares, five sheets of ice across two rec centres, spray parks at Lions and Castle, and Blakeburn's flat accessible loop — the family infrastructure is unshowy and it's all actually there.

What's the Traboulay PoCo Trail?

A continuous 25 km loop that encircles the entire city, running and cycling along the Pitt and Coquitlam rivers. Whatever part of PoCo you live in, you're near a piece of it.

Where do families gather?

Lions Park — picnic shelters, an adventure playground and a spray park, with the Coquitlam River running through it. It's the birthday-party park; book the shelter early.
